Episode 6 is an episode I kind of really love.
A lot of people have asked that I talk about burnout. I’ve been there, oh god, have I been there.
The first 2.5 years of Metal Marvels, there was no direction. While I loved the ability to work for myself, I wasn’t passionate about what I was doing, what I was selling, or much about the business. That’s super scary to admit but it’s real fucking life. No one ever wants to say that they’re burnout or not fully interested in what they’re doing. Given, shopping for items, interacting with customers, all of that, was some good shit. However, it left something to be desired within myself.
There’s a direct correlation with your soul and what you’re doing when it’s such a personal brand. So I started feeling extremely burnt out. I still looked at escaping (traveling) a lot and focusing on other things. So when I started seeing that people on social media actually being themselves and we started moving away from the fake social look (yes I know it’s still there but I think more and more people are working on showing real life), I realized that I could be that too. I did a lot of soul searching and work with Melissa, my biz coach, about stepping into that roll, being the face of the brand, and putting my ENTIRE self into the brand. Which was a lot to come to terms with. Knowing that I was going to be fully out there, open for anything to come my way.
LIFE CHANGING. No fucking joke, I can never say it enough, best thing I’ve ever done for my business. Then, it was like the world aligned completely and this fire inside me was no longer a small flame but a fucking wildfire burning out of control. Cheesy but true. The minute I started this path of being myself in business, creating a brand that I really wanted to shop from as a consumer, and being the bold person I am, the burnout was a literal 5 alarm fire.
So how do you get there? Burnout is not just for business. Burnout can be present in your life itself, as well as your business, or your 9-5. The BEST advice I can give you is to step away from whatever it is, really take a look at what you’re doing, and really look at what makes you happy.
I know you’re like, “ummm how do I step away from life?” Well, I was at a weird point in life, a relationship just ended, and I wasn’t sure where to go. I drove by myself, 7 hours up the coast and stayed in San Francisco for the weekend. One of those days, I took the bus to the Golden Gate Bridge viewpoint, I walked my ass allllll the way to the middle of the bridge and I just stood there. Staring at the sky & sunset for like 2 solid hours. I stood there, bundled up in my hoodie (which helped hide the tears), and allowed myself to be in my thoughts and emotions and all of it. The Sun was almost gone and this wave came over me, that I was no longer going to give time to those who didn’t deserve it, didn’t support me, and weren’t fully in it. In that entire weekend, I was REMOVED from my life. Sometimes stepping away, even for the weekend from everything that is a part of your regular life, can work wonders for business or life issues.
The last two sort of fall into the same thing. Stepping back (and you don’t HAVE to go on a mini vacation) even just taking a day off to analyze what you’re doing, what’s going on in your life that’s not making you happy, and where the problem lies. For me, it was noticing that what I was doing and selling, wasn’t fulfilling me at all. It was a blaring picture that what I was doing and what makes me happy, were two separate things. I’ve always been outspoken for how I feel, things I believe in, and things that matter to me. It was sort of appropriate that it aligned with my work. Whether it’s life or business, you can easily eliminate whatever it is that isn’t making you happy. This means removing people sometimes, because ain’t nobody got time for toxic people or those who don’t support you. Removing situations that don’t make you happy, whether it’s your work, products, etc.
I can’t stress how important it is to do something you love. Not only will you be fulfilled, more often than not, you’ll also end up making more money because it will be a genuine endeavor. Having all of this align can make such a huge difference in what you’re doing, how you feel, and ultimately what the outcome is.
Have you dealt with burnout? What do you do to help it?
