Let’s talk UP LEVELING!
So I don’t do New Years resolutions ever. I think they’re unrealistic because people always choose such outlandish things. I think goals short term and long term are great. I set goals for every year of business. Sales goals, product goals, etc. I don’t really set personal goals, mostly because I’m sort of impulsive. I mean hello, buying a house happened from idea to keys in hand in a matter of a month haha.
But something I decided for 2018 was that I was going to level up. I already did some of that in 2017 by growing the business yet again. Some businesses grow 5-10% a year, which obviously any growth is AMAZING. But the past two years I’ve grown over 200%. Which obviously makes me want to attain that again this year, which is what’s on my goal board. Buying the house and moving to a new state was leveling up.
So I really wanted to focus on that in 2018. Because why the fuck not.
A big thing in my previous jobs was that I wasn’t satisfied because I am always striving for more. For the next promotion. And upper management wasn’t giving it to me in the way I deserved it, or in a timely fashion at all. Honestly, something I’ve noticed over the years has been in dating too. I found myself getting really annoyed with people who were just fine sitting at a stalemate in their job. I can’t handle that. While I understand it takes time in working for someone else to go from current gig to CEO, it also takes work. I found a lot of people were simply doing what it took to get by. Now, I do think that some of those people possibly may have been doing that because they didn’t like their job and their heart was elsewhere. But it’s still true today, that I want someone who is going to go after their dreams, or want to level up in their career for the better.
Up Leveling literally means to make a move or change your life or career for the better.
You can do this in a myriad of ways and it won’t be the same for everyone.
For me personally, thus far I’ve done a few things to up level in my life and career.
I’ve up leveled by signing up for Freshly food service. Because I work so often and sometimes late, there’s no time to cook dinner, sometimes restaurants are closed and I don’t always want fast food. So I did this out of convenience. It helps the food is delicious. And also, a side benefit is that they’re pretty freakin healthy. So finding a service like this, or even one of the boxes where you cook the stuff, if you want to cook but don’t have time to shop, is another option. Or a service that brings your groceries. Basically time and convenience all wrapped into one. It’s a game changer for real. Time is money and this saves you a ton.
Buying the house was a definite up level. You know it forced me out of my comfort zone and into an entirely new state. Away from my friends (I literally know one person here, heyyy Alissa, who’s a customer turned friend but she lives on the complete opposite side of the valley haha). Away from my typical security blankets, friends, parents, my beach (my favorite spot in the world). And forced me to really step out, focus on me and my business, and into a change of scenery. I think it’s been really good for me. It’s forced me to go new places. Once I get some hiring done, I am definitely going to be adding in more conferences and business events into my life. Maybe then I can make some like minded friends around here which would be amazing.
Just recently I got a house cleaning service. Life. Fucking. Changing. Honestly, I’ve always hated cleaning. I was the kid who shoved shit under the bed and in the closet so shit looked clean. I’m not proud of it but that’s real fucking life haha. It’s definitely not the same with my own home. Because I feel like I def Gotta keep it clean, I paid for this shit haha. But I still hate cleaning so I decided that an expense I wanted to pay was a house cleaning service. It’s amazing. I have them come every 2 weeks and it’s perfect. Olive is still unsure what to make of it because I basically put here in the office with me and shut the door so she’s not in their way or freaked out by them. She pretty much stares at the door the entire time like “Whyyyy are there people in our house, why can’t I see them and why can I hear that devil machine (the vacuum)?” lol. Then magically they’re gone and the house smells wonderful. This is all about time and convenience also and goes back to delegating shit you hate. I hate cleaning. I don’t have time for it. It’s much more convenient to have someone come do it for me. I highly recommend this one to everyone.
Oh and I also decided to treat myself to little things that make me feel better. So I’ve taken a liking to IV therapy. They have an aging and beauty bag of vitamins basically. 30 minutes and you’re done. I felt great after. Also, doing things like hydra facials and derma planing, etc. Just little things to pamper myself occasionally because I definitely haven’t taken as good of care of my skin as I should have.
The house definitely played a part in this. Being that I need to keep the lights on, mortgage paid, expenses, etc. it forces me to work a little harder. Also being that I am here away from everything, there are fewer distractions which allows me to work more.
All of the things mentioned previously, allow me to level up business wise since my time is spared from those.
As far as business goes, I am currently working on hiring 1-2 people and expanding Kristen’s role with the company. This is upleveling like crazy. It was weird to even bring on fulfillment because I had done everything for SO LONG by myself. 3 years of doing it all alone. Then started fulfillment in Jan 2016 and that was game-changing. Recently I brought on Kristen to manage Facebook and all my pages. But now I’m looking to hire a few people to run all social media, advertising, etc. Then expanding Kristen’s role to handle a lot of operational stuff. This will leave me so much time to develop products, a blog for the store and Boss as fuck, to record this podcast, to hopefully write my book, etc.
A lot of times people are afraid to bring on help mostly because they look at the expense of it. But I truly believe that it takes money to make money. It doesn’t have to be a lot of money but it’s definitely going to cost something to get to that next level. Up-leveling is all about making a change for the better. Bringing in help, or outsourcing help, can seriously take your business to the next level. It will allow you to focus on what you love doing, what makes you money, etc. Obviously, their pay has to be within reason, but don’t be afraid to grow. I know it’s scary and it’s change, but I think allowing yourself and your business to step into your growth can make or break the company. IF I would have held back on the fulfillment idea because of my OCD control freak issues, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
Another way of upleveling which is something I am currently working on is surrounding yourself with people who hustle like you, who are at the same level as you, and people who are doing better than you. Lately, I’ve noticed that a lot of people I’m surrounded by in the small shop world either aren’t at my current level of sales, they’re too new, etc. or I’m noticing that people are simply too immature or petty or whatever else you want to call it. I’ve decided for myself that I don’t have time for women who can’t act like adults, esp about business, I refuse to waste my time on that. I have no problem walking away from situations that don’t serve me or my business or fulfill me. I am actively looking for women to connect with that are hustling it, that are killing it, and esp those who are doing better than me because I think surrounding yourself with people like that will push you to do better. If you’re surrounded by those that aren’t quite making it, are constantly complaining about their situation, or what have you, it will pull you down into that as well. I have 0 fucking time for that. So don’t be afraid to up level the people in your life. Walk away from toxic people and relationships. Sometimes you have to be cutthroat to do what’s best for you, your well being, and your business.
Don’t be afraid of change. Don’t be afraid of spending a little money to gain time. What are you going to up level in your life for 2018?
